Review by Daniel Bear

Grand Magus take the best of 70s and 80s metal, crank it up a notch and crack open your skull. There are a number of influences that can be heard (Dio era Black Sabbath , Rainbow etc..) but Grand Magus has given it a modern fresh sound. These guys produce the biggest riffs, killer hooks and sing-a-long choruses all soaked in Viking blood and oozing adrenaline. The Hunt is their sixth album release and their first with new drummer Ludwig "Ludde" Witt (Spiritual Beggars), joining Fox on Bass, Janne ‘JB’ Christoffersson on guitar and vocals. As well has being one hell of a guitar player JB has one of the best hard rock voices around. The Viking/Norse theme continues and the sound is more hard rock and a little less doom. The fact that this is not Grand Magus’s best album says far more about their previous releases than about this very fine album. Iron Will is my favourite album and I think the smoother, less in your face production on this album as opposed to Iron Will holds it back initially, but it soon starts to grow on you. The albums highlight is the epic ‘Son of the Last Breath’, which is a slight departure for Magus with its folk intro and overall epic sound. ‘The Hunt’ sounds closest to the songs on Iron Will, the albums opener ‘Starlight Slaughter’ is a great hard rocker as is ‘Iron Hand’ and ‘Valhalla Rising’ is an instant classic.

Final Word
Grand Magus never fail to deliver the goods and this is no exception, not as in your face as past offerings, but more sophisticated.
