Review by Daniel Bear

Morten Veland’s Sirenia are back with another slice of Goth rock, The Enigma of Life. The album is also an Enigma, it has everything you would expect a Sirenia album to have, but the music just seems toned down. There are some great guitar riffs and bass lines, but they are not in your face enough, the drumming also seems a bit too laid back, the whole thing lacks heaviness. With the major negative out of the way, you get catchy choruses and Ailyn’s beautiful voice, orchestra, choirs and the usual gothic lyrical content. The music itself is excellent, it is just the lack of punch that holds The Enigma of Life back. If this album was produced with a harder edge it would have been a completely different review, instead I would have to say this is Sirenia’s weakest album to date.

Final Word

I would imagine these songs sound a lot better live than they do here; it is such a shame that the slick, toned down production spoils this album. Disappointing.

Score 3/5
